Dental Fillings

Painless Dental Fillings at Lasting Smiles of Whitehouse Station

If you live in the Lebanon or Whitehouse Station area and have a tooth that is bothering you, you may need a dental filling.

Dental fillings are just one way to restore a damaged and decaying tooth back to its original state by closing off the infected area with filling material. Dental fillings can also be used to repair cracked, broken teeth or teeth that have been worn down from grinding. For the most part, dental fillings and the process of treating teeth that need them, is generally easy and does not require any type of extensive dental surgery.

Give Lasting Smiles of Whitehouse Station a call today to schedule a dental cleaning appointment before the pain gets worse. And if you need emergency dental care, we have dentists on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you can get the relief you need, fast.

What Are The Steps Involved When Filling a Tooth?

Far less complicated than a root canal treatmentdental extraction or dental implant, filling a tooth is a rather quick and painless procedure. To begin, the dentist will numb the affected area with a local anesthetic. When you are comfortable and numbed, a drill, air abrasion instrument or laser will then be used to remove the decayed area. The instrument that is chosen to be used will vary depending on the extent of the decay and the dentist’s level of training.

When the dentist is done removing the decay, prepping the tooth for its dental filling is next. This means a few quick shots of air inside of the cavity to make sure there is no leftover debris or bacteria. However, if the decay is near the root, you may need a liner made from composite resin or other material placed to protect the nerve. The dental filling can then finally be placed and the tooth polished.

Type of Dental Fillings Available Today

Decades ago the only viable dental filling choice we had was an unattractive silver metal that, to be honest, wasn’t very effective. Chances are if you have a silver filling it has fallen out more than once. Today, due to advances in cosmetic dentistry there are many dental filling options to fit every patient’s needs. At Lasting Smiles of Whitehouse Station, we use the following materials:

Composite: This type of filling is made of powdered glass and acrylic resin and is a popular choice amongst a lot of people due to its natural appearance. However, if you have a large area that needs to be filled, it’s not advisable to use composite material as its wears quickly over time.

Resin or Glass Ionomer: Not only do adults get cavities that need filling, but kids do too! Resin or glass ionomer is typically used for children that have small areas of decay on their primary teeth.

Porcelain: Much like dental veneers and composite fillings, porcelain is strong and gives off a natural appearance. They are produced in labs, bonded to teeth, and are stain-resistant.
