What Exactly is Dental Whitening?

Dental whitening is a routine cosmetic procedure in which we bleach your teeth to make them whiter, covering or eliminating stains and discoloration. The enamel on your teeth builds up over time and stains form. If you use tobacco, drink coffee and tea, or practice poor oral hygiene, you should consider this procedure.

Dental whitening is also commonly performed on patients whose teeth are discolored from the inside, known as an intrinsic stain. This stain can be brought on by environmental factors or trauma.

Can I Have My Teeth Whitened?

We don’t usually recommend teeth whitening to those with excessively worn enamel or periodontal disease, as well as those who experience chronic sensitivity. Although dental whitening is generally very effective, the relative success of the procedure varies for each person depending on the cause and severity of the stains. Furthermore, teeth whitening is ineffective on dental implantsdental veneers and crowns, nor is it performed on dentures, which you can take out and clean yourself.

How Do I Prepare for a Dental Whitening?

Beforehand, your teeth whitening dentist will examine your teeth to identify the cause of the stains and discoloration. We will treat any cavities or decay before whitening. If we don’t, the whitening solution can penetrate the tooth through the cavity.

How Does it all Work?

There are two different types of dental whitening:

  • Vital Whitening: Performed on teeth with live nerves
  • Non-vital Whitening: Performed on teeth that don’t have live nerves because of root canal treatment.

Vital whitening can be executed in the dentist’s office, at home, or both. In-office whitening typically requires up to three visits, with each appointment taking 30-to-90 minutes. The number of appointments and duration of each one depends on the severity of the stains, the level of whiteness sought, and the chosen whitening method. In most cases, our dentist will apply a whitening solution containing a form of hydrogen peroxide. We use a specialized light or laser to activate the solution and expedite the process.

If you opt for an in-home whitening, we will provide you with custom mouthpieces based on impressions of your teeth. You’ll fill the mouthpieces with the provided solution and wear them for a few hours each day according to our instructions.

How Long Does the Whitening Last?

Based on our recommendations and your desired results, the whitening can last as little as a few days and as long as a month. Remember in-office and in-home whitening are usually used to complement each other.

Teeth whitening isn’t permanent. Eventually, stains will accumulate after the procedure. You can receive a dental whitening again when stains return. We can schedule regular check-ups and devise a plan to maintain the health and color of your teeth.

Are There Any Risks?

You may feel sensitivity or gum irritation for a short time afterward. More severe side effects are quite rare. If you experience any pain or discomfort, don’t hesitate to contact us. Additionally, dental whitening is not recommended for those who are pregnant.
